A Case Study with the Aim of Optimizing Batch Production of Calcium Dodecyl Benzene Sulphonate on an Industrial Scale
This research project’s purpose was to investigate ways of improving production of calcium dodecyl benzene sulphonate without major investment or setup changes in Tollman Pty Ltd’s chemical plant. Tollman is a toll-manufacturer that utilises its existing setup to produce a range of different chemicals. In this research, current processes were evaluated to identify bottlenecks, production timelines were studied for possible improvements, and batch size, formulation and production procedures were also optimized based on vessel capacity. Filtration with a plate and frame filter press was identified as the major limiting cause, so a process was designed to optimize this step. It was found that splitting the filtration process from one large batch into two smaller batches in conjunction with optimized formulation and timeline gave the most significant improvements. The result produced a 35% yield gain together with a 22% time reduction per batch without major investment or setup changes.
