  • Amino-functionalized MWNTs (MWNT-NH2) was applied in fabrication of MWNT-NH2/PMMA nanocomposites which was functionalized via a series of chemical modification using thionyl chloride and hexamethylene diamine in order to enhance adsorption of MWNT onto PMMA main chains [1]. MWNT-NH2 reacted with PMMA by aid of amino groups [2] to form MWNT-NH2 /PMMA nanocomposites SEM and TEM images were applied to observe whether MWNT-NH2 was covalently bonded to the PMMA. Experiment results indicated that an uneven layer of the PMMA film was firmly sticked on the surface of MWNTs [3].. Strong absorbance at 1570cm-1 [4] was observed in both MWNT-NH2 and MWNT/NH2/PMMA nancomposites due to the existence of amino groups, further indicating that the PMMA was successfully grafted onto the MWNT-NH2. TGA was also used to measure not only thermal behavior of nanocomposites but also the content of PMMA on the surface of MWNTs. Finally, the rheological properties of MWNT-NH2/PMMA were investigated via a rotational rheometer.
